What's new in 2.11 (also 1.111), June 2025

ELN Features

  1. We've reviewed security and logging around usage of the public RSpace API, which resulted in a few changes:
    1. The OAuth 2.0 password grant flow, which allows authenticating to the public RSpace API through access tokens generated from user credentials, is now disabled by default. To re-enable it, the System Admin should change the api.oauth.authentication system setting
    2. Server-side logging is updated to clearly distinguish requests to the RSpace API that originate from external clients. These requests are collected into a new "ApiRequests" log file
    3. We reviewed and updated many messages logged into the "SecurityEvents" log file, so they are more consistent in terms of formatting, logged parameters, and context in which they are added

ELN Bugfixes

  1. We fixed a problem with some users being unable to delete their incoming Notifications

Inventory Features

  1. We've added new IGSN ID features, which will soon work nicely with our Fieldmark integration! 🎉
    1. An "IGSN IDs" sidebar item will open a new IGSN ID management page, which supports bulk-creating draft IDs without immediately associating them to Inventory items, viewing a comprehensive list of IDs managed by RSpace, and printing QR codes for labelling physical samples.
    2. When viewing an Inventory item, you can either choose to create a new IGSN ID and associate it with the item (existing functionality), or to link an already created IGSN ID (new functionality).
    3. As the linking interface supports barcode scanning, these two features can be used to print out draft IGSN ID labels, label samples collected in the field, then link those IGSN IDs to newly created sample entries when back from the field.

Inventory Bugfixes

  1. Improved UX when creating samples, ensuring the overview panel is not collapsed, and the name field is more clearly indicated as required

What's new in 2.10 (also 1.110), May 2025

ELN Features

  1. We're continuing to make improvements to our recently released open-source chemistry tooling:
    1. The new chemistry engine, which was until now available only to our supported customers, is now part of our open-source RSpace project on GitHub! 🎉
    2. Improvements to chemical search performance and exact and substructure search, including a fix for square brackets not working in search
    3. Improvements to chemical preview images. Also .pdb files now upload much quicker as we no longer try to generate a preview image (default pdb icon is used instead)
  2. PIs and LabAdmins can now move shared documents into shared Notebooks
  3. We reordered the sysadmin system settings list so properties are grouped into clearer categories

ELN Bugfixes

  1. Disabling the api.available system setting was causing issues in the UI. We redesigned the setting to make behaviour more robust: disabling the setting prevents external API clients from connecting with an API Key, or with OAuth credentials flow, but doesn't stop RSpace UI from calling public API endpoints
  2. UI improvement preventing users from inadvertently creating several new Notebooks at once

What’s new in 2.9 (also 1.109), April 2025

ELN Features

  1. Creation of Documents and Notebooks can be now triggered directly in shared folders. The Document or Notebook is created in the owner's Workspace as usual, but will also be immediately shared with collaborators in the selected location.

ELN Bugfixes

  1. We fixed a rare problem where duplicating a Document that is also shared into a Notebook could result in a copy of this Document being added to the Notebook. If you think your users were affected by this issue, please contact RSpace Support.

Inventory Features

  1. IGSN IDs can be now printed as QR code labels, as well as in a raffle book format (each label twice) for your field trip.

  3. We've updated the group invitation email notification: users who receive an invitation can accept or reject the invitation directly from the email.
  4. When a Sysadmin exports a Users table to CSV, the 'Usage' column will be formatted as a number. (#277)

ELN Bugfixes

  1. We fixed a couple of problems around exports including DMPs added through the DMPtool or DMPonline integrations.
  2. We fixed an occasional UI problem where after a period of inactivity, RSpace was redirecting the user to a page showing a printout of JSON data.

What’s new in 2.7 (also 1.107), February 2025

ELN Features

  1. We've released the redesigned Gallery! ✨ We've made many upgrades to the interface, including improving the filestores setup flow, addition of a Carousel view, and general user experience improvements. This new version will also make it easier to surface more metadata on files. While we hope that everything works as expected, if you encounter any issues, please let us know & access the feature on the old Gallery at your-server-url.researchspace.com/oldGallery in the meantime.
  2. As part of the new Gallery launch, we've also refreshed our navigation bar! It now works much better on smaller screens, emphasises the main areas of RSpace, and separates out less used areas of the app into an account dropdown.
  3. The DMPonline integration, which enables easy import of DMPs into the Gallery, is now available!
  4. When viewing a restored document with a historical attachment, we indicated more clearly that it cannot be edited directly.

  6. The choice of columns on the Sysadmin > Users page now persists across browser sessions.
  7. We improved performance when creating and sharing ELN content, especially in/into large folders (i.e. folders that already have lots of content). This should also help with performance of document creation in groups that use autosharing, and in document creation through our public API.

ELN Bugfixes

  1. GitHub Integration now queries the default branch, rather than assuming it will be named "master".

Community Contributions

  1. Improvements to the iRODS file system setup user experience (#39, contributed by ll4strw)
  2. Additional iRODS client/server negotiation policy configuration (#111, contributed by ll4strw)

What’s new in 2.6 (also 1.106), January 2025

ELN Features

  1. Proof-of-concept DMPonline integration will be available with the next version of DMPonline! ✨ This integration will become functional as soon as the next DMPonline release is out, as it enables user-level authentication.
  2. We're continuing work on the Gallery redesign (check it out by changing the URL to /newGallery!). This release implements the Filestores section, which supports configuring and accessing remote filestores directly or through iRODS, and various other improvements such as refreshed icons.
  3. We improved performance when sharing and unsharing ELN content with large groups of users. This should also help with performance of document creation in groups that use autosharing.

ELN Bugfixes

What’s new in 2.5 (also 1.105), December 2024

ELN Features

  1. You can now compare and export Documents as CSV! ✨ After selecting several Documents in the Workspace, pick CSV from the context menu to open the new "Export Documents to CSV" panel. This view enables you to easily compare values across various Document fields, and export selected Documents as CSV.
  2. We're hard at work on our Gallery redesign, with the current in-progress version available to try out by simply changing the URL from /gallery to /newGallery. This release brings navigation and view improvements (including a brand new Carousel view), a larger drag n' drop zone for easier file uploads, and support for editing. Our current focus is to improve how the Gallery integrates with filestores and RDM tools such as iRODS.

Inventory Features

  1. Ongoing Gallery redesign has made various improvements to the "Insert from Gallery" dialog, which enables attaching Gallery items to Inventory items.

What’s new in 2.4 (also 1.104), November 2024

ELN Features

  1. Support for Single-Sign On environments based on OpenID Connect protocol
  2. Separation of systems used for live chat and analytics, which enables sysadmins to toggle the support chat feature independently from analytics collection

ELN Bugfixes

  1. XML/HTML export now handles errors in a more robust way. This should stop occasional problems with user not getting any notification that their export has failed

What’s new in 2.3 (also 1.103), September 2024

ELN Features

  1. Improved form handling when deleting users: when a sysadmin deletes a user who owns Forms that are shared, we alert the sysadmin that the Forms will be transferred to them. This enables the removal of a user without losing access to their shared Forms
  2. For improved security, Users' API keys are now stored hashed on the database, and only displayed in plain-text immediately after creation

Inventory Features

  1. Gallery files can be now be directly attached to Inventory items! This is the first step in a series of improvements to streamline file association across RSpace. By moving towards treating all Inventory attachments as Gallery items, we can reduce file duplication and facilitate rich Inventory records. The attachment picker will also give you a preview of our upcoming redesigned Gallery interface! ✨
  2. Improved loading performance, thanks to a new API endpoint for retrieving images and thumbnails by their contentsHash
  3. Bulk-trashing all subsamples of a sample now raises a prompt to trash the sample
  4. We can now persist UI states, meaning you won't have to manually toggle certain options each time you reopen RSpace! For now, we save which detail panel sections are expanded, whether you've collapsed to one-panel view, and sorting/viewing options in the Gallery Picker.

What’s new in 2.2 (also 1.102), August 2024

ELN Features

  1. Integration with Digital Commons Data, enabling researchers to export their documents to the repository directly from RSpace
